St. John's Volleyball Falls to West Virginia, 3-2

Queens, NY (October 10, 2004) - The St. John's volleyball team fell to BIG EAST foe West Virginia today, 3-2 (18-30, 31-29, 25-30, 30-28, 9-15) at Alumni Hall. The Red Storm fall to 14-7 (0-2 BIG EAST), while the Mountaineers improve to 13-7 (1-0 BIG EAST).
St. John's has beaten West Virginia the last five years and held an 8-1 advantage before today's match.
The Red Storm was led by libero Nicole Colaluca who recorded a career-high 37 digs in the five-game loss. Co-captain Yana Ruban recorded 18 kills, Jackie Ahlers recorded 15 kills and setter Lisa Tedder notched 49 assists in the match.
West Virginia came out strong in game one, going on an early run led by Kelly Mullins who served several straight points. Although the Red Storm quickly answered back at 13-13, the Mountaineers went on an impressive 17-5 run and took game one easily at 30-18.
In game two, the score was tied throughout the first several points with aggressive plays at the net from both teams. St. John's began to pull away at 4-3 with five straight points from serving by Colaluca. Late in the game at 28-24, serving by Mullins pulled the Mountaineers to a tie with four straight points, but a service error and a kill by LaToya Blunt gave St. John's the win at 31-29.
Game three was tied through the 23rd point with the lead changing several times. At 23-23, Mountaineers pulled away with aggressive hitting, despite the Red Storm's great defensive effort and took game three, 30-25.
Up 2-1 in games, the Mountaineers scored several points with kills on the outside to extend their lead to 16-10. Aggressive serving by freshman Molly Roloff (12 digs) and sophomore Alicia Carmignani (8 kills, 14 digs) pulled the Red Storm on top, taking the game 30-28.
In game five, the momentum of the Mountaineers was high with blocks at the net by Alison Zemanski (14 blocks) and aggressive jump serving by Gina Cusanelli which put them on top and take the game quickly, 15-9.
The Red Storm returns to action on October 22 when they will travel to Syracuse, NY to face Syracuse University. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
