Syracuse Tops St. John's, 3-2

SYRACUSE, NY (October 22, 2004) - In their third straight five-game match, the St. John's volleyball team fell to BIG EAST foe Syracuse, 3-2 (30-26, 29-31, 16-30, 30-26, 12-15) tonight at the Women's Building. The Red Storm fall to 14-8 (0-3 BIG EAST) while the Orange improve to 19-5 (3-1 BIG EAST).
Junior outside hitter Jackie Ahlers led the Red Storm attack with 34 kills (.387 hitting pct.) while freshman LaToya Blunt added 15 kills.
In game one, the Orange pulled out to an early 9-6 lead with aggressive plays at the net. The Red Storm answered back with serving by co-captain Yana Ruban, who put St. John's on top 14-12. The two teams exchanged the lead several times late in the game, but at 22-22 the Red Storm went on an 8-4 run to take game one, 30-26.
Junior Anicia Wood led the Red Storm early in game two with blocks in the middle to put St. John's on top 6-1. Kelly Duan's aggressive plays at the net led Syracuse to within two until Blunt answered back will a kill down the line, forcing the Orange to take a time out. Down 20-16, Syracuse went on a 6-1 run taking the lead with diving defensive plays by libero Joscie Kaup. Tied at 28, Ruban and Alicia Carmignani came up with a big block on the right side to give St. John's game point at 29-28. Syracuse answered back serving three straight points to steal game two, 31-29.
Tied one game a piece, Syracuse and St. John's were neck and neck throughout the first several points. The Orange pulled ahead to a ten-point lead until Ahlers put one away down the line. Although the Red Storm fought hard scoring several points late in the game, the Orange took game three, 30-16.
Early in game four, Ahlers led the Red Storm with aggressive plays at the net to give St. John's a 9-8 lead. Syracuse answered back with several big blocks, forcing the Red Storm to take a time out. Tied at 13, the Orange pulled out to a four-point lead with kills by Cheryl Cobbina. Led by a Carmignani kill, the Red Storm went on their own four-point lead to tie the game at 17. Down 19-22, the Red Storm went on an 11-4 run to take game four, 30-26.
In the decisive fifth game, the Orange pulled out to a quick 8-5 lead with aggressive plays at the net. St. John's answered back going a 6-2 run led by kills by Ruban and Blunt. Syracuse answered back, scoring several unanswered points and took game five, 15-12.
The Red Storm returns to action this Sunday when they will travel to South Bend, IN to face Notre Dame. First serve is set for 3 p.m. EST.
