The St. John's cross country team opened its 2004 season by taking fifth place with 121 points at the Fordham Invite.
Juniors Aja Williams and Jasmine Barreto, running in the wet and blustery conditions caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ivan, led the Red Storm effort, crossing the line in 20th and 21st place, with times of 21:41.57 & 21:44.90 on the 5K course.
Senior Kathleen Maher was next to finish for St. John's with her 22:38.98 clocking in 27th place. Freshman Tara Normandin was the fourth Red Storm runner to finish, recording a minute and a half personal record of 22:36.99. Sophomore Shelby Mix, in her first collegiate race, closed out the scoring for St. John's with her 36th place finish with a time of 23:15.17. Juniors Thamara Cherisme (43rd - 24:17.50), Dominique Ficalora (45th - 24:22.70), and Tarashon Broomes (55th - 25:53.96) rounded out the Red Storm effort for the day.
"Opening meets usually create a little anxiety as everyone is trying to find what condition they are in after the summer vacation," Head Coach Jim Hurt said, "and the weather added to that anxiety today. I saw some very positive things from the team effort and our ability to adjust to the adverse weather indicates our competitive instincts are good. Aja & Jasmine did a good job up top and Tara & Shelby ran well in their inaugural efforts in Red Storm uniforms. Kathleen, Thamara, Dominque, and Tarashon will all get better as they get more experience as the season progresses. We are looking forward to running the course again in two weeks at the Metropolitan Championships."
