Queens, NY - The No. 10-ranked St. John's men's soccer team won its second-straight match with a 1-0 decision over Pittsburgh on Saturday.
The win improves the Red Storm's record to 9-3-4 overall, but more importantly, to 6-1-3 in the BIG EAST. It clinches at least a second place finish in the league, pending the outcome of tonight's Notre Dame-Rutgers match.
St. John's controlled play for most of the game, and had some first half opportunities to score, but could not punch one as the game was scoreless at the break.
The Red Storm broke through in the 75th minute, when junior Sebastian Alvarado-Ralph punched in a shot off of a rebound past Pittsburgh keeper Justin Lowery, giving the Red Storm a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish.
"It was a very tight game," St. John's Head Coach Dave Masur said. "They are a strong and physical team, but we did well and we got the result. We knew it was going to be a tough match, and it was good to get out with a win."
The Red Storm out shot the Panthers (4-6-3, 2-4-1) 16-4, and had three corner kicks, holding Pitt to jus tone.
St. John's returns to action next weekend, playing FIU and South Florida at the FIU Classic in Miami.
