St. John's Volleyball Falls to Seton Hall, 3-2

QUEENS, NY (October 31, 2004) - In their fourth five-game BIG EAST conference match of the season, the St. John's volleyball team fell to Seton Hall, 3-2 (35-37, 30-24, 30-25, 28-30, 9-15) today at Alumni Hall. The Red Storm fall to 15-10 (1-5 BIG EAST) while the Pirates improve to 8-19 (2-4 BIG EAST).
Junior outside hitter Jackie Ahlers led the Red Storm attack with 30 kills and four total blocks. Co-captain Yana Ruban added 21 kills and junior Anicia Wood recorded a .462 hitting percentage on with six kills. Freshman setter Lisa Tedder notched a double double with 62 assists and 13 digs.
Game one was tied through the first 20 points with several unforced errors by both teams. Late in the game, St. John's and Seton Hall railed for the win with aggressive plays at the net by Ruban and in the back row by Alicia Carmignani (14 digs). At 35-35, the Pirates put down two straight balls, stealing the 35-minute game, 37-35.
In games two and three, the Red Storm began a momentous run and led throughout each game with aggressive serving by freshman defensive specialist Molly Roloff (seven digs, two aces). Wood and Ruban controlled plays at the net, putting down several of the Pirates attempts. Although Seton Hall attempted late runs in each game, St. John's pulled through and took both games 30-24 and 30-25.
In game four, the Red Storm was trailing 10-18 before Carmingnani went back to serve seven straight points to force the Pirates to call a time out. Seton Hall captured the lead once again with kills by Alex Dyer who took the Pirates to game point at 29-25. St. John's then went on their own run with kills by Ahlers to cut the lead to one, but Seton Hall pulled through and stole game four, 30-28.
In the decisive fifth game, the Pirates pulled out to a quick lead with aggressive serving by Amber Davis and never let up. Seton Hall took game five easily, 15-9.
The Red Storm returns to action next Saturday when they will host BIG EAST opponent Georgetown at Alumni Hall. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
