New York, N.Y. -- On February 18, 2004, the St. John's men's lacrosse program headed by new coach Rick Sowell held a reception for alumni at Madison Square Garden. The event attracted more than 40 former players, alumni and friends of the past lacrosse programs that were a part of St. John's history.
David C. Wegrzyn, Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Athletics at St. John's addressed the assembly along with Kathy Meehan, Associate Vice President for Athletics, Rick Cole Jr., Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs and Dom Scianna, Associate A.D. for Athletic Communications.
To end the reception, Sowell mapped out a game-plan for the future of St. John's Lacrosse that will begin in the fall of 2004. He laid out the new conference affiliation (ECAC) which sports some of the best collegiate teams in the country and promised to play a competitive schedule in bringing the finest teams from the NCAA Division I one ranks to Queens.
Sowell was introduced to the crowd that evening during a timeout in the St. John's/Georgetown game as the lacrosse alumni were treated to dinner and a win as the Red Storm prevailed over the Hoyas for their first BIG EAST victory of the season.
A good time was had by all and Sowell and assistant Patrick Finn plan more great alumni functions leading up to their inaugural season in 2005.
