Svoboda Advances to 2004 U.S. Amateur Match Play Championship

Queens, NY - Stroke play of the 2004 United States Amateur at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY concluded on Tuesday with former St. John's University men's golf standout Andrew Svoboda advancing to the match play round of 64. Svoboda fired a two-round score of three-over par 143 to finish tied for fifth in the opening stroke play round. On Monday, he battled through the difficult weather conditions to shoot a four-over par 74, but followed it up with a one-under par 69 on Tuesday, one of only six rounds to be played under par so far in the championship. With stroke play complete, he moves on to match play competition today. Svoboda, the fifth seed, will take on the 60th seed Matt Kodama of Las Vegas, NV at noon. Today's first round will be televised on ESPN2 at 1 pm. Another former Red Storm golfer, Gary Blados failed to qualify for the 64-player match play championship, having shot a two-round total of 21-over par 161.
