St. John's women's soccer junior Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, NY) has been named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, it was announced today by the conference office. Schmidt, who led the Red Storm with 21 points, tallying a team-high 11 assists, was an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection in 2003 and receives preseason honors for the first time in her career. After a third place finish in the Northeast Division last year, the Red Storm have been tabbed to finish eighth in a preseason poll voted on by the league's head coaches. Notre Dame, who were undefeated in conference play in 2003, were picked to win the conference in 2004. National runner-up Connecticut was picked second and are followed by West Virginia, Boston College and BIG EAST Tournament Champions Villanova to round out the top five picks. The BIG EAST Conference will depart from its two-division (Northeast/MidAtlantic) format for 2004, returning to their original format. This season each team will face 10 of the 12 member institutions during the regular season, competing for one of eight spots in the 2004 BIG EAST Championship Tournament. The Red Storm kick off the season in West Point, NY against Hartford and Army. The 2004 home opener is scheduled for September 5 against Binghamton. Kickoff at Belson Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
