Queens, NY - The St. John's University men's golf team will swing into action this weekend September 11-12 at the Navy Invitational, which marks the start to their 2004 fall season. The tournament is being held at the Navy Golf Club in Annapolis, MD.
St. John's head coach Frank Darby enters his ninth season at the helm of the Red Storm golf program. The Red Storm have won 13 team championships and 23 individual championships over the last eight years. The 2003-04 season was highlighted by a first place finish at the Hofstra Invitational, in which the Red Storm dominated with three golfer's finishing in the top five.
St. John's this season has only two seniors returning, but has a very young and experienced team looking forward to getting back into the NCAA Regional. The Red Storm will be led by junior Brian McArdle (Huntington, NY) who led the team in percentage of rounds counted (92.6) and was second in stroke average (76.70) in the 2003-04 season. Sophomore Joe Yastrub (Lake Grove, NY) looks to improve on a good first year in which he was third on the team in stroke average (77.25) and had three top-20 finishes. Also returning this season are Seniors Ian Middleton (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Tim McCarthy (Saddle River, NJ) along with junior Tom Travalja (Oradell, NJ).
The Red Storm will look to their freshman class of Keegan Bradley (Hopkinton, MA) and Blake St. John (Glasgow, Scotland) to help them improve on last season. Bradley comes to St. John's with an already successful amateur career. He won the 2003-04 Massachusetts High School individual championship en route to being named Massachusetts High School Player of the Year. The addition of Keegan and Blake should be a good compliment to Red Storm.
