Queens, NY - St. John's senior goalkeeper Bill Gaudette (Hummelstown, PA) was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week and Red Storm freshman defender Steven Old (Palmerston North, New Zealand) was named to the CollegeSoccerNews.com National Team of the Week, it was announced today.
Gaudette led the Red Storm to the team title at the St. John's Nike Cup this weekend. The Red Storm posted a 2-0 win over Seton Hall on Friday night, and then topped No. 10 Saint Louis, 1-0, to secure the tournament title.
A starter for the Red Storm the last four years, Gaudette has posted a 4-1-1 record this season and has a 0.81 goals against average.
The St. John's defensive unit, always one of the toughest in the nation, has recorded five shutouts in six games played this season, limiting opponents to only 26 shots on goal, just over four per game.
Gaudette has a career record of 36-9-9, with a 0.66 goals-against average, 130 saves and 27 shutouts.
Old's first two collegiate goals were memorable, including a game-winner against the 10th ranked Billikens on Saturday night. He scored the second goal in the team's 2-0 win over the Pirates on Friday, and nailed a header on Saturday night in the 17th minute before St. John's held on for an impressive 1-0 win over Saint Louis. Old was part of a defensive backline that limited the Billikens to only four shots and held MAC Hermann Trophy candidate Will John to none.
The wins, which improved St. John's to 4-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the BIG EAST, moved St. John's back up to No. 2in the CollegeSoccerNews.com Top 30 national poll.
St. John's returns to action on Wednesday, playing a league match at Georgetown. The Hoyas, who are 3-4-0 overall, are coming off a 4-1 loss at Notre Dame this past weekend. Kickoff is slated for 3p.m.
The Red Storm will continue a road swing this weekend, playing at Boston College (4-1-0, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) on Sunday, September 26 at 2 p.m.
