Fort Wayne, IN (September 25, 2004) - In a preview match of the new BIG EAST conference beginning in 2005, the St. John's volleyball team beat DePaul 3-2 (25-30, 30-24, 30-25, 20-30, 15-10) in their second match of the 2004 IPFW Volleyball Invitational. The Red Storm improve to 8-4 (0-0 BIG EAST) while the Blue Demons fall to 7-7.
Junior Jackie Ahlers led the Red Storm attack with 31 kills (.509 hitting pct.), while Alicia Carmignani recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 18 digs.
The Red Storm pulled out to a quick 4-1 lead in the first game before the Blue Demons fought back to take the lead at 10 with jump serving by Mandy Moorberg. Ahlers led the Red Storm attack connecting with setter Lisa Tedder six times in the first game to stay close behind DePaul who maintained the lead. Although the Red Storm fought hard in the back row with efforts by libero Nicole Colaluca, DePaul came on top and took game one, 30-25.
Down 5-2 in the second game, St. John's fought back to take the lead 11-7 behind consistent serving by Molly Roloff and LaToya Blunt. The Red Storm extended their lead to 21-15 before DePaul started on a 4-0 run led by Moorberg's serving attack. Ahlers answered back, pushing three kills through the block late in the game edge St. John's over DePaul to take the second game 30-24.
In the third game St. John's pulled out to a 15-3 lead, led by aggressive net plays by junior Anicia Wood. At 18-5, the Blue Demons went on a 6-0 run, cutting the lead to seven lead by Amy Holmes. Alhers had several kills for St. John's before DePaul went on a second run late in the game cutting the lead to four at 25-21. With unstoppable defense in the back row by Colaluca and Carmignani, the Red Storm took game three, 30-25.
DePaul rallied to an 8-2 lead by aggressive serving by libero Ellen Hayes in the start of the fourth game. The Blue Demons extended their lead to 21-12 with three straight service errors by the Red Storm. St. John's fought back late in the game with several unanswered points, but was not enough as DePaul took the game 30- 20, forcing a game five.
In the deciding game, the two teams were tied throughout the sixth point until St. John's pulled ahead 8-6 to switch sides. The Red Storm continued their attack with an unstoppable effort at the net by Ahlers and Wood to take the game 15-10 and the match, 3-2.
The Red Storm returns to action later this afternoon where they will face Evansville in their last match of the 2004 IPFW Volleyball Invitational. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m. (EST).
