Queens, NY - The St. John's University women's basketball program has released its 2004-05 schedule, it was announced today. The Red Storm will face nine 2004 NCAA Tournament participants, including the 2004 National Champion Connecticut Huskies and conference champions from the Patriot League and the BIG EAST. Once again, 16 BIG EAST games will highlight the Red Storm's schedule.
"Our 2004-05 schedule looks tremendous with four national powers coming to Alumni Hall, including an early BIG EAST match-up against defending National Champion UConn," said Head Coach Kim Barnes Arico. "Aside from our top notch BIG EAST schedule, we are playing a number of our local rivals as we look to continue to build our fan base in the New York Metropolitan Area."
Barnes Arico looks to build on a 10-win season and return to the BIG EAST Tournament in 2005, as she begins her third year on the sidelines. Helping her with that task will be Angela (Angie) Clark, a 2003-04 BIG EAST All-Rookie team unanimous selection. Clark supplied 12.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game last year and will reunite with high school teammate Kia Wright this season. The two led Copiague High School to the 2003 Class A State Public School Championship and were each named to the All-Long Island team their senior year.
"There will be a lot of new and exciting players who will help fill in the missing pieces and we think the future is as bright as ever," Barnes Arico added. "We are excited and look to continue moving forward, as we look to return to the BIG EAST Tournament for the second-straight season."
The Red Storm open the season on November 20 at the St. Bonaventure Tournament, where they will face MAAC member Canisius College in the first round and either the host Bonnies or Patriot League reigning champion Colgate in game two.
The regular season conference schedule opens with 2004 NCAA Champion Connecticut visiting Alumni Hall on January 2. The January portion of the conference schedule will continue with home contests against Rutgers, Seton Hall and Syracuse and road games versus Pittsburgh, Georgetown, Notre Dame and Seton Hall.
The BIG EAST regular season concludes on March 1 when Boston College travels to Alumni Hall. The 2005 BIG EAST Tournament, which returns to the Hartford Civic Center for the second-straight season, will take place from March 5-8. The Championship game will be broadcast on ESPN.
