Georgetown Stops St. John's with 85-73 Win

Washington, DC - The St. John's women's basketball team fell to 2-3 in the BIG EAST with an 85-73 loss at Georgetown this afternoon. The Red Storm fall to 13-3 overall, while Georgetown improves to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
After scoring on the first play of the game, Georgetown added three more baskets, to pull out to an early 8-0 lead. Tara Walker (Jersey City, NJ) grabbed an offensive rebound off of a missed Red Storm three-pointer and scored the first of six-straight points for St. John's. Georgetown responded with six-straight points, before Angela Clark (Copiague, NY) stopped the run with a lay-up. Two minutes later Clark scored on back-to-back plays and cut the Hoya lead to four, but Kristin Heidloff kicked off 10-straight Georgetown points with a three-pointer.
Kia Wright (Copiague, NY) ended the four minute scoreless drought with a jumper and scored again after grabbing her own offensive rebound off a missed free throw on the same play. Heidloff once again answered with a three for the Hoya's and Varda Tamoulianis added two points to put Georgetown up 33-18 with 5:31 to play in the first.
Wright's free throws on the next play sparked an 8-0 run by the Red Storm, who pulled within seven with just over three minutes remaining. The Hoya's regained an 11-point lead with 1:31 left, but St. John's scored four points in the final minute, making the halftime score 39-33 in favor of Georgetown.
The Hoyas were back up by 11 points early in the second period, after another made three-pointer by Heidloff. St. John' pulled within four on two free throws by Wright, but the Hoyas outscored the Red Storm 13-5 over the next seven minutes to take a 69-52 lead with 6:49 remaining. A lay-up by Kieraah Marlow with 3:54 remaining gave Georgetown a 15-point edge.
The Hoyas pulled out to their largest lead of the game, an 18-point advantage after three consecutive free throws with 2:32 to play. One minute later, Jenn Jones (Arkport, NY) and Greeba Barlow (Columbia, MD) combined for five points to pull within 12. St. John's would not come any closer, as the Hoyas held on for the 85-73 win.
Walker finished with her second double-double of the season, chipping in 14 points and 12 rebounds for St. John's. Wright led the team with 17 points, while Barlow finished with 14 and Clark with 12 to round out for St. John's players in double figures. Heidloff led the Hoyas with a game-high 23.
St. John's will return to action on Saturday, January 22 when they host Syracuse at 12 pm.
