Desmarteaux, Nylen, Chiporuka Advance to Quarterfinals at Columbia Classic

New York, NY - In the first day of spring action for the St. John's University men's tennis team, Louis Desmarteaux, David Nylen and Boris Chiporuka all advanced to the quarterfinals, along with the doubles pair of Desmarteaux and Claudio Halim.
In the Flight A singles first round, Desmarteaux won an easy 6-2, 6-0 match over Alon Cohen of Manhattan College to advance. He is scheduled to face Brandon Wai of Yale, who beat Leo Rodriguez, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarters. Also in Flight A, Nylen battled through a tough first set to win 7-6 (3), 6-3 over Yale's Ryan Murphy. He will face Zoltan Bus from Manhattan in the quarterfinals. Nick Stocker dropped his Flight A match to Akshay Rao of Columbia, 6-0, 6-1 and will face Pedro Genovese of Marist in the Flight A Consolation round.
Chiporuka was the Red Storm's lone winner in Flight B, topping Filip Szynick of Manhattan by a 6-4, 6-3 score. Chiporuka will take on Jared Drucker of Columbia in the quarters. Halim and Todd Goldberg dropped their opening round matches, Halim falling to Johnny Lu of Yale (6-3, 2-6, 6-2) and Goldberg to Marty Moore of Columbia (6-2, 6-3). Halim will take on Frank Algier of Marist in the consolation and Goldberg will face Yale's Matt Feldman.
The doubles pair of Halim/Desmarteaux took St. John's lone doubles win of the first day, as the duo topped they beat Columbia's team of Accordino/Wallace 8-3. They will take on Murphy/Wai of Yale in the quarterfinal round. Chiporuka and Nylen fell in their opening round doubles match, losing to Emany/Clemente of Columbia by a score of 8-5, while the Red Storm duo of Stocker/Goldberg lost 8-2 to Rao/Robbin of Columbia.
The Quarterfinals and the consolation rounds of the Columbia Classic will resume tomorrow.
