St. John's Softball Closes Fall Season on Winning Note

Queens, N.Y. - St. John's softball capped the fall season off with a scoreless tie against Fairfield. The two teams were caught in a classic pitchers duel going scoreless through seven innings. Freshman Jessica Foley was solid on the mound working in a complete game shutout, striking out five, walking four, and allowing only three hits. For Fairfield, Tara Hansen held off the offense through five innings before Cagney Ringnalda came in to secure the shutout.
In game one against Dowling, sophomore Lisa Geer gave another dazzling performance in the pitchers circle. Geer fanned 12, walked one and allowed only one hit in a complete game shut out against Dowling. The Red Storm's defense was solid behind Geer, committing only one error.
Offensively, the team came out on top early scoring a run a piece in the first two innings. Senior Megan Oliver was walked to start the game and later scored on a double by senior Jo Sherlock. In the second with two outs on the board, sophomore Bionka King singled to keep the Red Storm alive. After stealing second, King reached home on a single by freshman Melissa Pilley.
Things heated up again in the bottom of the sixth for St. John's with back to back to back singles by senior Jessica Marical, junior Tami Hill and freshman Melissa Pilley. With the bases loaded, Oliver kept the hitting streak going, singling in Marical to make the score 3-0.
The Red Storm offense combined for three stolen bases on the day and 13 hits, while the pitchers worked for 12 strikes and four walks with four hits.
Fairfield defeated Dowling 7-5 in the middle game of the afternoon.
