Men's Tennis Begins Play at UPenn Invite

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's team began play at the UPenn Invite Friday afternoon. Fourth-seeded David Nylen (Orebro, Sweden) and eighth-seeded Louis Desmarteaux (Thornhill, Ontario) both advanced in Flight A singles. Eighth-seeded Claudio Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and freshman Aliaksandr Svetlakou (Minsk, Belarus) will also continue play in Flight B singles for the Red Storm this weekend.
Morgan Bauer (New York, N.Y.) and Halim was victorious in the first round of doubles play at the invite. They defeated eighth-seeded Diego and David Alvarado of Manhattan 8-5. The duo produced another win in round two Friday afternoon. They topped Shannon Morales and Andrew Husby of Princeton 8-5. Bauer and Halim will face the No. 1 seeded Martin Sayer and James Lloyd of Radford in the next round.
Fourth-seeded duo Desmarteaux and Svetlakou defeated Phillip Gegenheimer and Matt Struble of Temple 8-4 and then were victorious over Jared Drucker and Dan Urban of Columbia 8-5. They will play sixth-seeded Tas Tobais and Jimmy Fairbanks of Penn in the third round.
In Flight A singles play, Desmarteaux defeated Arjun Vaidya of Ruters 6-3, 6-3. Desmarteaux will play Nickolai Nielson of Maryland at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Nielson topped Andrew Husby of Princeton 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-1. Nylen was victorious over Brandon O'Gara of Penn 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Saturday morning Nylen will face Arthur Vasarevic of Radford. Vasarevic advanced by defeating Andreas Vaage Nilsen of Maryland 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.
In Flight B singles action, Halim defeated Vlad Kouvton of Rutgers 6-1, 6-3. Halim will play Llia Shatavili of Columbia at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Shatasvili advanced on aw 6-4, 7-5 win over Phil Bayliss of St. Joseph's. Svetlakou swept K-Ming Lee of Manhattan 6-0, 6-0. He will play sixth-seeded Antonio Aniello of St. Joseph's at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Aniello defeated Jon Sy of Temple 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the second round.
The UPenn Invite resumes play on Saturday, Oct. 29 and concludes on Sunday, Oct. 30.
