Desmarteaux And Svetlakou Advance To Doubles Finals At UPenn Invite

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team will advance fourth-seeded Louis Desmarteaux (Thornhill, Ontario) and Aliaksandr Svetlakou (Minsk, Belarus) to the finals for the doubles draw at the UPenn Invite in Philadelphia, Pa. The duo defeated sixth-seeded Tas Tobais and Jimmy Fairbanks of Penn 8-3 in the quarterfinals on Saturday and were then victorious over Michael Coleman and Louis-Xavier Lavalle of Maryland 8-4. Desmarteaux and Svetlakou will play Martin Sayer and James Lloyd of Radford in the final round Sunday afternoon.
In Flight A singles play, eighth-seeded Desmarteaux lost to Nickolai Nielsen of Maryland 6-4, 6-1, while David Nylen (Orebro, Sweden) fell to Arthur Vasarevic of Radford 6-0, 7-5. In Flight B singles, eighth-seeded Claudio Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) defeated Llia Shatasvili of Columbia 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) before falling to No. 1 seed Filip Szymik of Manhattan 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. In other quarterfinal action, Svetlakou loss to Adrian Lai of Navy 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Svetlakou advanced after defeating sixth-seeded Antonio Aniello of St. Joseph's 6-2, 7-5, 7-6(0) in the second round.
The Red Storm wraps up its fall season at the UPenn Invite on Sunday, Oct. 30. The men's tennis team will resume play in January.
