QUEENS, N.Y.-- Jodey Johnson and Jasmine Barreto led the St. John's women's cross country team to an eighth place finish at the Metropolitan Championships at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx, N.Y., Friday.
Johnson (Portmore, Jamaica) and Barreto (Staten Island, N.Y.) each recorded their season best performance in the 5K clocking in at 19:47 and 19:48, respectively. Johnson finished in 14th place while Barreto finished one step behind in 15th.
Kristen Levy (Salisbury Mills, N.Y.) also recorded her season best at Van Cortland Park, taking forty seconds off her previous time. Levy crossed the line in 22:31 and finished in 75th place. Meanwhile, Tara Normandin (Waterford, N.Y.) strode in at 24:08 to finish in 101st and Thamara Cherisme (Hollis, N.Y.) finished out the scoring for the Red Storm in 118th and a time of 24:24, to improve her season best at Van Cortland Park by four seconds.
"I thought our team showed great progress especially Jodey, Jasmine, Kristen, Kaydian and Tarashon," said head coach Jim Hurt. "They all significantly dropped their time from the Fordham Invitational at Van Cortland Park last month. Jodey and Jasmine ran together and established themselves up front for early in the race. Unfortunately both Rakibat Abiola and Nerissa Pelle were unable to finish, which kept us from placing better in the team scoring."
Also finishing for St. John's was Kaydian Reid (Windsor, Conn.) in 118th place with a time of 25:10, and Tarashon Broomes (Fairlwan, N.J.)finished in 26:19 for 129th place. Reid's time improved by 1:21 while Broomes took 1:31 off her previous best.
The Red Storm returns to action Sunday, October 16th in the St. John's Fall Cross Country Festival on the Oakdale campus in Oakdale, N.Y. Last season, the Red Storm took second place in the race and Johnson took second place individually.
"I am looking forward to hosting the Fall Cross Country Festival and seeing similar progress from our team," said Hurt. "We invite all family, alumni, friends and the campus community to join us at the Oakdale Campus for a great day of cross country running and to help raise funds for breast cancer awareness by participating in our one mile run/walk."
