Red Storm Volleyball Sweeps Blue Demons 3-0

QUEENS, N.Y. - Hui Ping Huang (The Republic of China) led the St. John's volleyball team (16-6, BIG EAST 2-3) to its second BIG EAST victory of the season Sunday afternoon. St. John's defeated DePaul University (3-13, BIG EAST 0-5) 3-0 at Carnesecca Arena. Huang posted a match-high 15 kills on .375 hitting and commanded three total blocks.
Middle blocker Shameka Mitchell (Lakeland, Fla.) and outside hitter Patti Hardiman (Honolulu, Hawaii) added depth to the Red Storm's offense with 11 kills each. Hardiman also served up six service aces, while Mitchell was a force at the net with six total blocks. Casie Brooks (Victorville, Calif) and Lisa Tedder (Coos Bay, Ore.) both stood out as setters for the match. Brooks gained 22 assists and Tedder had 19.
The Red Storm took an early lead in the first game off attacking errors by DePaul and kills from Hardiman, Mitchell and LaToya Blunt (Vacaville, Calif.). DePaul tightened the gap by three, 16-13, but was unable to tie the game. St. John's jumped to an eight point lead before Caitlin Rimgaila (Trooper, Pa.) scored game point off a set from Tedder. St. John's finished the game 30-21.
The score was kept close by the Blue Demons in the beginning of game two. DePaul tied the game on attacking errors by Anicia Wood (Wotton Terrace, Barbados) but could not gain the advantage. Three service aces from Hardiman gave St. John's the lead once again and a kill from Huang closed game two 30-23.
St. John's came back strong after the break taking a 3-0 run in the opening minutes of play. DePaul answered with kills from Caitlin Callaghan and Mandy Moorberg and brought the score within one several times. However, DePaul could not take the advantage. Blunt's high powered kill off of Tedder gave St. John's the win, 30-26.
Callaghan and Moorberg led DePaul with eight kills each. Callaghan also commanded 12 digs. Freshman Mandi Caputo led the Blue Demons in assists with 20.
St. John's returns to action on Friday, Oct. 14 against the University of Connecticut. The game will begin at 7 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena.
