Cross Country Team Concludes Season At The ECAC Championships

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's cross country team completed the 2005 season Saturday at the ECAC Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The Red Storm competed in the ECAC 5K University Race and finished in 21st place.
"I felt our women's cross country team made significant progress each meet and that our effort at the ECAC reflected a number of personal bests and huge improvements from our opening meet at Van Cortlandt Park in September," said head coach Jim Hurt. "Unfortunately we were without two of our better runners (Jodey Johnson and Nerissa Pelle ) the final two meets so our overall team placings do not reflect the progress that our team has made all year long."
Senior Jasmine Barreto (Staten Island, N.Y.) strided to her best performance of the season, clocking in at 19:43.6 for 36th place. Freshman Rakibat Abiola (Staten Island, N.Y.) was the next St. John's runner to finish, crossing the line in 21:43.9.
Senior Thamara Cherisme (Hollis, N.Y.) took almost two minutes off her time, recording a personal best of 22:13.0. Junior Kristen Levy (Salisbury Mills, N.Y.) and sophomore Tara Normandin (Waterford, N.Y.) closed out the scoring for the Red Storm, striding in at 22:43.0 and 23:31.1, respectively. Meanwhile, senior Dominique Ficalora (Oceanside, N.Y.) crossed the line in 24:34.6.
"I have especially enjoyed working with this group and appreciate their hard efforts each and every day of practice," said Hurt. "We lose Jasmine, Thamara and Dominque and will miss them but the rest of the team returns so I am looking forward to continuing our move forward next cross country season."
The St. John's indoor track and field schedule gets underway December 1 at the Manhattan College Multi-Events and Throws Meet at Manhattan College in Riverdale, N.Y.
