St. John's Falls To Marist, 56-53

NEW YORK (AP) - Will Whittington scored 20 points, including two free throws with 24 seconds to play, and Marist beat St. John's 56-53 on Saturday, the Red Foxes' first win over the Red Storm.
Marist (3-4) took the lead for good at 51-50 on a free throw by Ryan Stilphen with 1:43 left. After a missed 3-pointer by St. John's, Carl Hood hit a 3 for the Red Foxes with 1 minute left. Those were his first points of the game, on his second shot of the game.
Lamont Hamilton hit a 3 for the Red Storm (5-3) with 34 seconds left to make it a one-point game.
Jared Jordan of Marist was fouled with 30 seconds left, but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Whittington was able to get the rebound and he was fouled. An 86 percent free throw shooter, he made both ends of a 1-and-1 with 24 seconds left to make it a three-point game.
Anthony Mason Jr. and Daryll Hill of St. John's both missed 3-point attempts to tie in the final 8 seconds.
Whittington was 4-for-8 from 3-point range for Marist, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Stilphen added 10 points and Jordan finished with nine points and 11 assists.
Mason, playing for the first time on the Madison Square Garden court where his father played for the New York Knicks, and Hill each had 13 points for St. John's. Hamilton and Eugene Lawrence had 11 points apiece for the Red Storm.
Marist had lost all three previous meetings with St. John's.
