St. John's Falls at Villanova 65-51

Villanova, PA - The Villanova Wildcats topped St. John's 65-51 this afternoon. With the loss, the Red Storm fall to 17-7 overall and 6-7 in the BIG EAST, while Villanova improves to 16-8 overall and 9-4 in the conference.
St. John's came up with back-to-back defensive stops in the early minutes of the second half and, after two-straight baskets from Tara Walker (Jersey City, NJ), cut the lead to 40-27 with 15:21 remaining in regulation. Villanova bounced back with a three-pointer by #30 and increased its lead to 17 with under 12 minutes to play.
The Red Storm surged back, as Walker and Chelsey Thompson combined for six-straight points, helping the Red Storm pull within 13. Minutes later, St. John's pulled within 12 after a jumper in the paint by Angela Clark (Copiague, NY), but a three-point play from Jackie Adamshick put Villanova back up by 15 with 5:24 remaining.
McManus' three on the next play kicked off a 6-0 for the Wildcats that gave them a 21-point lead. Greeba Barlow (Columbia, MD) scored seven-straight for St. John's and Tiina Sten (Turku, Finland) ended the game with a three, making the final 65-51.
In the first half, St. John's struggled to protect the ball, resulting in 14 points off turnovers for Villanova. The Wildcats took an early 14-5 lead after their 12-0 run was capped by back-to-back threes from Jen Hilgenberg and Betsey McManus. Clark tallied a bucket to break up the run, which Villanova extended to a 17-2 slant.
Kati Kurtosi (Miskolc, Hungary) sank a three for the Red Storm with 8:30 remaining in the first to cut the Wildcats' lead to 19-11 and Kia Wright (Copiague, NY) added two free throws to cut the lead to six. Once again Villanova responded, this time with a 14-4 run to build a 35-17 halftime lead.
St. John's will return to Carnesecca Arena on Tuesday, February 22 when they host Georgetown. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
