St. John's Win Thriller Against Providence, 62-59

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to St. John's in BIG EAST Conference action, 62-59, on Saturday, February 26 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Sophomore Jill Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) led all scorers with a career-high 21 points in the Friar effort, and added five assists, three steals and one blocked shot. Kia Wright led the Red Storm with 13 points. Angela Clark registered a double-double for St. John's with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The game featured 15 lead changes and the score was tied 17 times. The difference in the game was St. Johns' 20-of-28 shooting from the foul line, compared to PC's nine-of-14 shooting from the charity stripe. The Red Storm also got 21 points from their reserves to PC's 14.
The Friars took a 28-25 lead into the locker room at halftime on 48.1-percent shooting from the floor (13-27). Providence held St. John's to 25-percent shooting from the field in the first half (7-28). Furstenburg led all scorers in the opening 20 minutes with 11 points.
St. John's opened the second half with a 4-0 run to earn a 29-28 lead with 18:47 on the clock. The Red Storm pushed their lead to five (39-34) on a 10-6 run with 16:12 to play. The Friars answered with a 9-0 scoring run of their own to take a four-point lead (43-39) at the 12:46 mark. The two teams traded baskets and the game was tied five more times over the next 8:33. The Friars held the lead for one last time (53-52) with 4:13 remaining. St. John's closed out the game with a 10-6 scoring advantage to take the three-point victory.
Sophomore Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) took a contested three-point shot with one-second remaining to tie the game before the end of regulation, but the shot bounced off the back of the rim and into the hands of Clark.
Snyder finished the game with 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Kristina Baugh (Boston, Mass.) tallied 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Greeba Barlow came off the bench for St. John's and registered eight points, four rebounds and four assists in 22 minutes.
Providence College (1-25, 0-15 BIG EAST) concludes its regular-season schedule against Pittsburgh on Monday, February 28. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
