Queens, NY - On the day the St. John's University softball program honored their three graduating seniors, the Red Storm swept Providence this afternoon at Red Storm Field, 3-2 and 5-3. St. John's improves to 20-30-1 overall and 6-10 in the BIG EAST, while the Friars end their season at 33-20 overall and 5-13 in the league.
In game one, the Red Storm jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With runners at second and third with one out, senior Allina Sainz (San Diego, CA) singled up the middle, scoring one, but the second runner, freshman Danielle Estrada (Moreno Valley, CA) was called out at home on the play. Junior Jo Sherlock (San Diego, CA) followed with a RBI double to right center, scoring Sainz. With the double, Sherlock tied the program's career doubles record of 41, previously held by Teresa DiRoberto.
St. John's added another run, the would-be game-winner, in the bottom of the second inning to expand the lead to 3-0. Singles by sophomore Christina Tucker (San Diego, CA) and junior Megan Oliver (Endicott, NY) placed runners at the corner. Estrada came through with a two-out RBI, singling to left field to score Tucker.
Starter Meghan Allman (San Diego, CA) allowed only two base runners through the first six innings, before running into trouble in the seventh. A double and two singles to begin the inning accounted for the first run, capped off by an RBI by Kalena Petersen. After a walk loaded the bases with no outs and knocked out Allman, freshman Lisa Geer (Anaheim, CA) unleashed a wild pitch to plate the second run. However, Geer would leave the runners at second and third, to preserve the win for Allman and pick up her fourth save of the season.
Allman would pick up her fifth win of the season, allowing only the two runs on four hits over six innings. Estrada and Tucker each had two hits in the win.
The Friars took an early 1-0 lead in game two on a RBI double by Jackie Karsnia with two outs in the top of the second inning.
The score would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Red Storm exploded for five runs. The scoring began with a bases loaded, bases clearing double by Estrada down the left field line. After sophomore Tami Hill (San Diego, CA) singled through the middle, Sainz drilled a two-run home run over the centerfield fence, her fifth of the season, for a 5-1 lead.
Providence cut into the deficit on a solo home run by Michelle Willette in the top of the sixth and a single run in the top of the seventh, but that would not be enough, as the Red Storm held on for the 5-3 win.
Geer picked up the win, going the first six plus innings, allowing three runs on only three hits. Allman closed the door for her first save of the season, allowing only one hit in the seventh.
The Red Storm will make-up the postponed doubleheader with Pittsburgh on Sunday, May 8 at noon, with the games to be played on the campus of Villanova University.
