Queens, N.Y. - The St. John's women's soccer team dropped its first game of the season to Marist, 1-0 in overtime at Belson Stadium this evening. Marist's Justine Caccamo scored the game-winning goal two minutes and ten seconds into the extra session. The Red Storm fall to 0-1 on the season while Marist begins its schedule 1-0.
In the 92nd minute of action, Red Fox midfielder Kat Murray was awarded a free kick from 22 yards out on the left side of the goal. Murray's kick went across the goal mouth and was deflected by a St. John's defender. Murray then chipped the ball towards the goal but Red Storm keeper Rebecca Capinera deflected it back into play, allowing Caccamo to follow with the game-winner.
The Red Storm out-shot the Red Foxes 12 to 8 in the loss. St. John's best scoring opportunities came from corner kicks, where the Red Storm also topped Marist 6 to 2. St. John's best chance of the game came seven minutes into the contest when Kati Schantz headed the ball off of a corner kick by Erin Henderson, but had her shot blocked on the goal line by a Red Fox defender.
The Red Storm nearly netted the game winner when a free kick by Brittany Cavarra to Holly Ryder at the 18 yard line was blocked on the doorstep by Marist goalkeeper Anna Case in the 89th minute.
St. John's is back in action Friday, September 2 against Bucknell at 4 p.m. and Sunday, September 4 vs. Quinnipiac at 11 a.m. in the Columbia University tournament.
