Cross Country Team Kicks Off Schedule with Charity Race

Queens, N.Y.- The St. John's cross country team starts its season this Saturday at the Peter Speranza 5K Run to Help the Children in Sea Cliff, N.Y. The charity race helps raise money for the SCO Family of Services program, formerly known as St. Christopher-Ottlie.
Nine members of the Red Storm squad will be participating in the race. This is the second straight year St. John's has run in this event. The race begins at 9:45 a.m.
The event takes place at St. Christopher's Home, a place for children with developmental disabilities. The SCO Family of Services also provides foster care for children who have been abused and neglected as well as programs and assistance for homeless families and teen mothers and their babies.
"I'm looking forward to opening up the season, and I'm glad that we're participating again in this charity run," said head coach Jim Hurt . "I'm looking forward to seeing how the team looks in the opening meet of the year."
Last season, senior Jasmine Barreto finished third in her age group and 21st overall with a time of 20:54. Seniors Shelby Mix and Tarashon Broomes finished fourth and sixth in their age group with times of 23:56 and 26:26, respectively.
