Queens, N.Y. - The St. John's University Department of Athletics held its annual Student-Athlete Orientation on Monday, Aug. 29. The event is now a full-day affair, welcoming freshman athletes to the St. John's family. Student-Athlete Orientation is designed to familiarize the newcomers with campus as well introduce fellow athletes.
Students spent the day learning about the St. John's tradition and were given advice on how to get the most out of their collegiate careers. Speakers included Red Storm Director of Athletics Chris Monasch, Associate Vice President for Academic Support Services Dr. Nancy S. Kaplan and men's soccer head coach Dr. David Masur, who provided the student-athletes with information on the tradition of Red Storm sports.
The "Amazing Race" was the highlight of the afternoon, as the 90 student-athletes in attendance were split into groups of 10. With each group led by an upper-class student-athlete, the teams were given 10 tasks to complete and 90 mintues to finish. Each task was worth a certain amount of points and bonuses were awarded to those who finished their mission early. A disposable camera was provided to each team to document each of its 10 tasks. The yellow team came out on top when the race was over and were recognized in front of their fellow athletes at a dinner later in the evening.
"Feedback from the students was very positive," said Associate Director of Student Development Mary Pat Beirne. "The Student-Development team spent a lot of time planning the event and were thrilled with the results. Students felt welcomed and are eager to be part of the St. John's family."
