Williamsburg, Va. - The St. John's women's volleyball team wrapped the second day of the William and Mary Invitational 3-1. The Red Storm concluded its first game 3-1 against Elon College (30-18, 30-24, 27-30, 30-26). The Storm then finished off the tournament with a 3-0 win over Liberty University (30-20, 30-16, 30-20).
Patti Hardiman (Honolulu, Hawaii) led the Storm's offense and defense for the tournament. She hit .246 and gained 49 kills. Hardiman also posted 26 digs. Lisa Tedder (Coos Bay, Ore.) led the Storm in assists with 116.
GAME THREE: St. John's Bounces Back with a 3-1 Win over Elon College
The start second day of the William and Mary Invitational was similar to the first. St. John's took an initial lead over Elon College. Resilient control up at the net was vital to the Storm's success over the Phoenix. St. John's capitalized on its advantage, finishing 30-18.
The Red Storm created a six point opening for itself in the beginning of game two, keeping the ball in its control. Caitlin Rimgaila (Trooper, Pa.) was a significant force up at the net, landing a solo block and two block assists. The Phoenix tried to close in on the Storm, narrowing the gap 29-24, but the Storm held on and concluded game two 30-24.
Elon went point-for-point with the Storm in the opening minutes of game three. St. John's held a brief two-point lead but Elon fought back tying up the score. The Phoenix now had the two-point advantage, and used to take game three 30-27.
St. John's controlled the lead at the start of the fourth game, but Elon forced its way through to take control of the board 22-19. St. John's quickly tied up the game 22-22. The remainder was much similar to the previous game. The two teams went head-to-head fighting hard to take a large enough lead to capture the win. St. John's, off a 4-0 run, pocketed the win 30-26.
Outside hitter Hardiman led the Storm's offense hitting 25 percent and Kathleen Yee (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Hardiman controlled the Storm's defense posting 15 digs each.
Elon's Britany Westphal was central in the Phoenix's offense hitting 27 percent. Elon stands at 0-6 while St. John's improves 7-3.
GAME FOUR: St. John's tops Liberty University 3-0
St. John's began with a sizeable lead over Liberty University in the opening minutes of play. Zealous attempts from Hui Ping Huang (The Republic of China), hitting 78 percent and adding 7 kills, aided in keeping the Storm ahead. The Red Storm swiftly took game one, 30-20.
The Red Storm's 4-0 run rapidly put points on the board at the start of the second game. Dominating the game 13-2, the Storm countered all attempts the Flames tried to take to shorten the gap. After struggling to grab game point, the Storm finished the game 30-15.
Liberty came back on the court of game three ready to take control. The Flames created a small lead for themselves but it wasn't meant to last long. St. John's drove hard to take a four-point lead and continued its control of the board bringing the game to a 30-20 close.
Huang led the Storm hitting 57 percent for all three games and Hardiman held the defense with 11 digs.
Liberty's Ashley Webber led her team's offensive hitting 67 percent. St. John's out hit Liberty 27 to two percent.
ON DECK:
The Red Storm travels to Hempstead, N.Y. to play Hofstra University in the Queens Nassau Cup on Wednesday, September 14 at 5 p.m. The Storm comes home Thursday, September 15 at 7 p.m. when it faces St. Francis College.
