Queens, NY - St. John's softball hosted the first of three fall invitationals Saturday, winning games against Long Island and Marist at Red Storm Field.
In game one against Long Island, St. John's offense exploded in the fourth and fifth innings. Senior Blair Belloni started things off in the fourth with a double and then advanced to third on an overthrow to first. Next up was sophomore Danielle Estrada whose double scored Belloni. Estrada took advantage of another miscue by Long Island later in the inning, scoring on a passed ball. Junior Loren Anguiano's two-run homer in the fifth gave the Red Storm the lead for good. St. John's took the win, 7-6.
Marist was unable to quiet the Storm in game two as St. John's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. A clutch two-run double by freshman Roxanne Struble gave the team a 4-0 lead in the third. All of St. John's run were scored in the first and third innings and that proved to be all freshman pitcher Jessica Foley needed in a complete game victory. Foley fanned seven and walked only one, allowing minimal damage on nine hits. The Red Storm defeated Marist 4-3.
The Red Storm takes on Sacred Heart at 11 a.m. and Rider at 3 p.m. next Saturday as it plays host to another fall invitational at Red Storm Field.
