The Cincinnati Bearcats top the Red Storm 3-1

Queens, NY - St. John's women's volleyball fell to the University of Cincinnati 1-3 in Friday night's BIG EAST match-up. This was the first meeting of the two teams and was both teams first taste of 2005 BIG EAST action. Cincinnati improves to 6-5 (BIG EAST 1-0), while St. John's stands at 14-4 (BIG EAST 0-1).
Freshman Hui Ping Huang (The Republic of China) led the Red Storm hitting 43 percent and tied teammate Anicia Wood (Wotton Terrace, Barbados) for total blocks (5). Libero Kathleen Yee (Honolulu, HI) tallied another match-high 16 digs, while Casie Brooks (Victorville, CA) added another 33 assists to her record.
St. John's began its BIG EAST opener point-for-point against the Cincinnati. The Bearcats took a short-lived five point lead, 18-13, but the Red Storm tied the score back up and continued the head-to-head competition. The Red Storm ended the first game 30-28 after back-to-back kills from Shameka Mitchell (Lakeland, FL) and Huang.
Game two started in a similar fashion, but the Bearcats gained the advantage and kept it for the remainder of the game. The Red Storm came within one once, but was unable to capitalize. Cincinnati finished the game 30-21.
St. John's held a three-point lead over Cincinnati in the midst of game three before Cincinnati tied the score 18-18. A kill from Myanna Hellesten gave the Bearcats game point, 30-26. The Bearcats quickly took a 3-0 lead in game four and kept the advantage to take game four 30-22.
Jenny Custer led the Bearcats with 17 kills and five service aces. Meanwhile, Noel Olson posted a match-high 46 assists.
St. John's continues BIG EAST play on the road this weekend, traveling to Louisville, KY to face the No. 7 Cardinals on Sunday, September 25. The game begins at 2 p.m. in Cardinal Arena.
