Queens, NY. - The St. John's women's soccer team dropped its second game of the year in overtime, 1-0, to Yale at Belson Stadium. The Bulldogs Eli Benson scored the game-winning goal one minute and fourteen seconds into the extra session. The Red Storm drops to 2-2 on the year while Yale picks up its first win to improve to 1-2.
In the 91st minute of action, Bulldogs midfielder Natasha Mann was awarded a corner kick. Her kick went across the field to forward Maggie Westfal, who chipped the ball over to Benson 18 yards out. Benson then blasted the game-winner into the net past Red Storm freshman goalie, Rebecca Capinera (Watertown, CT).
St. John's was out shot 16-5 in the contest, 8-1 in the second half. The Bulldogs were also ahead in corner kicks, 2-1. Despite Yale's offensive strength, the Red Storm defense came up big, saving nine shots.
"I think we showed that we can play with the best teams in the country," said head coach Ian Stone . "We now have to continue improving and pay more attention to detail in order to turn a tight loss into a win."
The Red Storm returns to action this weekend at the University of Connecticut Tournament. St. John's kicks-off against Colgate Friday at 4:30 p.m., and Sunday when it collides with the University of Massachusetts at 11 a.m.
