QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's University and the Athletic Department is holding its annual blood drive on Wed., Jan. 25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the lobby of Carnesecca Arena. This will be the first of five drives during the spring semester.
"Without St. John's we can't get it done," said Susan Lingenfelter, manager of business development at Long Island Blood Services. "Donations we receive from St. John's alone help serve more than 200 hospitals."
This year Long Island Blood Services (LIBS) aims to receive 90-100 donations per drive. Last year's athletics-sponsored blood drive collected 40 pints of blood.
St. John's is the largest provider of blood donations in Queens. The drive will be the fourth blood drive sponsored by the Athletic Department. The first drive was initiated in support for Artie DaSilva, a former assistant director of recreational sports at St. John's, who was diagnosed with leukemia.
"These events are wonderful," said Paula Migliore, campus minister for athletics. "They build awareness of how great a need there is for all of us to do our part in whatever way we can."
Students can participate in others ways besides donating blood. They can help by advertising the event and helping recruit others in the St. John's community to donate. For questions regarding the blood drive, please contact Paula Migliore at 718-990-6426 or migliorp@stjohns.edu.
NOTE: Blood donors must be 16-76-years-old (16 with parents' written permission; 76+ with a doctor's note), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, be in good general health and not have donated blood in the past 56 days.
