St. John??' Volleyball Tops Georgetown, 3-0

Senior Caitlin Rimgaila (Trooper, Pa.) lead the way with a match-high 15 kills as the St. John???s volleyball team defeated Georgetown, 3-0 (30-19, 30-25, 30-25), Friday night at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm improved its overall record to 24-1 and remained undefeated in BIG EAST action with a 9-0 mark. Meanwhile, the Hoyas dropped to 7-15 on the season and are 1-8 in conference play.
The victory marked St. John???s 15th consecutive win and the squad???s 18th three-game sweep of the season. The Red Storm is two wins shy of tying the school record for most wins in a single volleyball season and most shutout victories.
Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week Patti Hardimon (Honolulu, Hawaii) registered 10 kills, while sophomore Hui Ping Huang (The People???s Republic of China) chipped in with 10 kills on 15 attempts, with no errors to produced a team-best .667 hitting percentage. Libero Kathleen Yee (Honolulu, Hawaii) recorded a match-high 15 digs, while junior setter Wioleta Leszczynska (Bielsko-Biala, Poland) dished out 45 assists and a .500 hitting percentage.
St. John???s opened the match with a 6-2 run in the first game. Three Red Storm kills in a row gave the squad the advantage as Latoya Blunt (Vacaville, Calif.), Casie Brooks (Victorville, Calif.) and Hardimon put the ball down to give St. John???s a 20-9 lead. Georgetown answered back with points from Kiersten McKoy and Kortney Robinson to close the gap, 25-18. However, a block from Blunt and Hardimon ended the first game for the Red Storm, 30-19.
The Red Storm began game two by taking the first three points. Back-to-back kills from Brooks pushed the score to 7-1, and St. John???s held onto control of the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. Three successful attacks from Huang gave the Red Storm a six-point lead, 15-8. Robinson, Annie Connor and Jessica George racked on points for the Hoyas but they were unable to knot the score. St. John???s continued to pull ahead and won the second game, 30-25.
Georgetown came back from the break recharged and energized. The Hoyas battled point-for-point with the Red Storm, taking the one-point lead nine times. The third game was tied 15 times before St. John???s will able to produce a four-point gap on kills from Huang, 24-20. Georgetown tried to bring the score within one again, but fell short as St. John???s closed out the match, 30-25.
Connor was the only Hoya to notch double-digit kills as she checked in with 11. George and Courtney Cohen each produced a team-best .571 hitting percentage while Caitlin Boland earned a double-double with 31 assists and 10 digs.
The Red Storm returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 29, against the Bulls of South Florida. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m., at Carnesecca Arena.
