Senior Caitlin Rimgaila (Trooper, Pa.) registered a match-high 15 kills to lead the St. John???s volleyball team to its 22nd three-game (30-10, 30-15, 30-18) sweep of the season over Rutgers. The Red Storm improved its winning streak to 19 contests, and moved its season record to 28-1 and stayed perfect in BIG EAST play with an impressive 13-0 mark. Meanwhile, Rutgers dropped to 5-19 on the season and 2-11 in conference action.
Co-captain Patti Hardimon (Honolulu, Hawaii) and junior Latoya Blunt (Vacaville, Calif.) recorded 12 kills each in the victory. Sophomore Casie Brooks (Victorville, Calif.) posted match-highs with a .800 hitting percentage and four total blocks. Setter Wioleta Leszczynska (Bielsko-Biala, Poland) registered a double-double with 33 assists and 11 digs, while libero Kathleen Yee (Honolulu, Hawaii) controlled the backline with a match-high 15 digs.
The Scarlet Knights earned the first point of the match, but the Red Storm responded quickly with a kill from Brooks. Blunt knotted the score again, 2-2, and with a solid service rally from Yee, St. John???s produced a seven-point run to bring the score to 9-3. The Red Storm continued to pull ahead on successful attacks from Leszczynska, Hardimon and Blunt. Huang slammed the ball down to put a 14-point gap in the score, 21-7. Rutgers would only score three more points as St. John???s stormed through the first game, 30-10.
Rutgers also registered the first point of the second game with a kill from Brittani Rendina, but Blunt put down back-to-back kills to put St. John???s on the board. The Red Storm rallied once again behind serves from Yee to go on a 12-1 run, and make the score 15-4. Freshman Ruisa Scheffel (Novo Hamburgo, Brazil) and Hardimon each had three kills in the run. The Scarlet Knights??? Amanda Meyer stopped the Red Storm???s run and Stephanie Moore put a point on the board, but Rimgaila replied to make the score, 18-7. Sophie Cook registered Rutgers??? last point of the game, as St. John???s cruised to a 30-15 win.
Junior Leszczynska opened the third game with an ace for St. John???s, but Rutgers answered back with kills from Moore and Macon to grab a 3-2 lead. The score was tied two more times with kills from the Red Storm???s Elizabeth Austin (Kansas City, Mo.) and the Scarlet Knights??? Rendina. St. John???s was able to take the advantage with points from Hardimon, Rimgaila, and Blunt, but Rutgers remained close behind, knotting the score once more at 11-11. Points from Rimgaila and Leszczynska gave the Red Storm final control of the scoreboard, 19-15. Rutgers took advantage of two St. John???s errors as it tried to tie the score again, but back-to-back service aces from Hardimon sealed the deal and a block from Rimgaila and Brooks ended the match, 30-18.
The Scarlet Knights were led by Meyer who registered a team-best 12 kills. Roxy Calder collected 11 assists.
The Red Storm returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 12, in its final game of the regular season against the Wildcats of Villanova. The senior day match is scheduled for 5 p.m., in Carnesecca Arena. Before the match, St. John???s athletics will honor its graduating volleyball seniors.
