Men's Tennis Splits Weekend Matches

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team fell in a hard fought battle to local rival Manhattan College Sunday night in Riverdale, N.Y. The Jaspers grabbed a 4-3 victory over the Red Storm, while the previous afternoon, the Red Storm defeated BIG EAST conference foe Georgetown 6-1 in Dumfries, Va. St. John's is now 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference.
ST. JOHN'S 6, GEORGETOWN 1
The Red Storm defeated the Hoyas 6-1 in both of the teams first BIG EAST conference matches of the season.
In doubles play, St. John's was victorious in all three positions. Louis Desmarteaux (Thornhill, Canada) and Aliaksandr Svetlakov (Minsk, Belarus) fought hard on their way to a 9-7 victory over Eric Conrad and Kevin Walsh. At the No. 2 spot, senior David Nylen (Orebro, Sweden) and junior transfer Tom Green (Norwich, England) defeated Ted Tywang and Andrew Clayton 8-5, while Morgan Bauer (New York, N.Y.) and Claudio Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) were victorious at the No. 3 position, grabbing an 8-1 win from Adam Gross and Ken Wong.
In singles action, Desmarteaux recorded a 6-1, 6-3 win over Scott Maucher at the No. 1 spot. Meanwhile, Green topped Tywang (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) at the No. 3 position and Svetlakov downed Etienne Paris at No. 4 (6-1, 6-2). At the No. 5 spot, Bauer knocked out Bert Baggio (6-3, 6-4).
Georgtown's lone win came at the hands of Kevin Killeavy. He defeated freshman Jordan Talbot (Toronto, Canada) (6-3, 6-3) at the No. 6 spot.
MANHATTAN 4, ST. JOHN'S 3
Manhattan sped past St. John's to a 4-3 victory Sunday. With the win the Jasper's improve to a 3-4 overall record. Peter Czink won the deciding singles match at the No. 4 spot, winning two tiebreakers over Svetlakov (7-6(11), 7-6(5)).
In other singles action, junior Desmarteaux defeated Bogdan Borta (6-1, 6-2) at the No. 1 position, while at the No. 2 spot Nylen stormed past Diego Alvarado (6-1, 6-4).
In doubles play, Halim and Bauer picked up the Red Storm's only win over Diego and David Alvarado (8-6).
The Red Storm returns to action next weekend on the road with its first game against the Tigers of Princeton on Friday, Feb. 24. St. John's then travels to Columbia on Saturday and ends the weekend in Philadelphia, Pa., to face UPenn. First serve is set for 3 p.m., 4 p.m., and 12 p.m., respectively.
