Kim Barnes Arico
Head Coach, St. John's
On what the team's offense did to counter Marquette's zone defense in the second half:
"I thought we made some good adjustments in the second half. We ran the baseline and had some open looks there. I thought we did a better job attacking them in the second half than we did in the first half."
On Marquette's Krystal Ellis:
"She made open looks. She had 21 points. She is a solid kid."
On bouncing back for the next game and the rest of the season:
"It is one game and tomorrow it is over. That's the way we always take things. I think if we harp on this, it is going to affect us for the rest of the season. I don't think we should be satisfied because there were a lot of things that need to be improved on, but I think that's what tomorrow's about, preparing for the next game."
On the upcoming week off:
"I think it is good because with we could use a day off to give us time to prepare for our next opponent and get back to some fundamentals. When you have games back-to-back you stop working on all the things we did in the preseason and this will give us time to have some good practices."
Kia Wright
Junior Guard, St. John's
On Marquette's zone defense:
"We were a little loose and don't play well against a zone. We get rushed, lose focus, rush shots and aren't patient."
On what the team has to work on to play better against the zone:
"We have to be patient in the zone. Tonight we were very stagnant at times. We worked on it all week in practice but we just have to prepare and be more focused during the game."
On what the team did to tie game after the deficit at halftime:
"We came out more intense. We went down the floor and fought back."
Terri Mitchell
Head Coach, Marquette
On the team's zone defense:
"We were going to play some man-to-man but the overall plan was to play our zone because we have so much respect for the athleticism of St. John's that we really needed a contained mentality of protecting the paint and if you're going to give something up, give up the outside shot. In the second half, St. John's started to have their way with us and pick us a part a little so we started to switch back and forth."
On St. John's:
"We knew it would be tough. St. John's plays great basketball and are such a well coached team. Kim has done a great job and they are very deserving of being in the Top 25. Our win tonight should not taint at all the kind of season they are having. But we're all fighting for the BIG EAST tournament."
