PITTSBURGH, PA. - The St. John's softball team split two games with Pittsburgh in its BIG EAST conference opener. In game one, the Red Storm came from behind to defeat the Panthers, 9-4. The second match up of the day saw Pittsburgh take its first home win of the season, 5-2.
Game One: A seven run sixth inning helped St. John's secure its first conference victory of the season. The game had been close up until the top of the sixth with Pittsburgh holding a 4-2 lead. Freshman Lauren Lupinetti put the Red Storm on the board when she belted a solo home run during her first at bat. It was her sixth of the season.
Loren Anguiano started the late rally with a two run home run over the center field fence. She drove in freshman Melissa Pilley, who was pinch running for Lupinetti. For Pilley, it was her first collegiate run scored.
The next four batters were walked or singled as Pittsburgh's pitcher Meghan Bostick continued to struggle. Before the end of the sixth, senior Jo Sherlock posted her fourth home run of the season, a three run shot over the fence in right center field to make the score 9-4.
Kim Lerch started in game one, allowing four runs over four innings, none earned. Sophomore Lisa Geer pitched the final three innings, picking up her sixth win of the season.
Game Two: The Red Storm jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning and a spectacular defensive play from Sherlock kept it that way for another two innings. With Pittsburgh in danger of tying the score in the second, Sherlock made a throw from center field to home plate to get the base runner out on the play.
Anguiano scored both of St. John's runs in the second game and was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and two singles.
Each of the Red Storm's three pitchers spent time on the mound in game two with freshman Jessica Foley eventually taking the loss.
Pittsburgh's offense distributed runs over the third, fourth and fifth to earn its first home win of the season, 5-2.
The Red Storm hosts Syracuse, Sunday, March 26 at 12 p.m. in its second BIG EAST match up of the weekend.
