QUEENS, N.Y. - The Red Storm softball team split a pair of home games against Fairfield, taking the first game 8-3 and dropping the second, 4-1. Game one featured home runs from Lauren Lupinetti (Long Beach, Calif.) and Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) and two extra base hits from junior Loren Anguiano. The day was also highlighted by record setting attendance at Red Storm Field when more than 300 fans showed up to cheer on the home team and enjoy a free BBQ, courtesy of School Spirit and Athletic Marketing.
Game One: Early home runs for both teams tied the score at 2-2 after the first. Fairfield's Tara Hansen and St. John's Lauren Lupinetti belted two run home runs in their first at bats. For Lupinetti, it was her seventh of the season.
The Red Storm took the lead in the second inning when Loren Anguiano scored on a wild pitch, making the score 3-2. Anguiano was outstanding as the designated player in game one, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and one run scored.
St. John's never relinquished its lead and a three run sixth inning laid to rest any ideas Fairfield would have about a comeback. Senior Jo Sherlock blasted a two run home run, her fifth of the season, to put the Red Storm up 7-3. Anguiano's second double of the game drove in Melissa Pilley (Phoenix, Ariz.), who scored the final run of the game.
This week's BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, Lisa Geer (Anaheim, Calif.) struck out nine on her way to her seventh victory of the season. She gave up five hits, two of them home runs, but was able to work her way out of trouble when necessary.
Game Two: Fairfield took an early lead when Julie Jacoby scored on a wild pitch. The Stags added two more in the third and would eventually go up 4-0. Two Fairfield runs were allowed on errors by the Red Storm's defense.
Roxann Struble (Chino, Calif.) tried to get things going late with a triple to right field in the seventh inning. It was the rookie's eighth extra base hit of the season. Fellow freshman Jessica Foley kept the rally going when her RBI single scored Struble and put up the first Red Storm run of the game. That is as far as the comeback would go as Fairfield defeated St. John's, 4-1.
Foley took her fifth loss of the season in a solid outing. She struck out a career high nine batters and allowed only two earned runs.
The Red Storm will hit the road for another BIG EAST weekend. The team will take on its third nationally ranked opponent this season when its plays No. 20/21 Lousiville, Friday, March 31 at 4 p.m. before heading to South Florida for a pair of Sunday games. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
