QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team begins a six game homestand this weekend against Stony Brook Friday afternoon. Recently, junior Louis Desmarteaux checked in with www.RedStormSports.com to answer some questions about himself, the team and the season so far.
RedStormSports.com: What is your favorite sport to play other than tennis?
Louis Desmarteaux: Golf. I've played since I was 12 and it is relaxing. On a nice day there is nothing like playing a round of 18.
RSS: What is it that you love about playing tennis?
LD: Competing and playing with my teammates.
RSS: Talk about playing at the No. 1 spot and your singles record this season:
LD: Well, I've been primarily playing there since my freshman year, so it is a pretty comfortable spot for me. As for my individual record, I really don't pay much attention to it. I just focus on playing each match and getting the win at the No. 1 spot. It is really not about the individual effort, but about getting the point for the team.
RSS: What is your favorite food?
LD: Italian. Linguini Alfredo
RSS: Do you have a favorite movie?
LD: Gone in 60 Seconds and the Italian Job.
RSS: What is your most memorable moment playing tennis at St. John's?
LD: This year's match against Army. It was such a long day and we were up 3-2. I started getting a cramp in my leg because it was my fourth match of the day, but I came away with the win, which gave our team the overall win.
RSS: What do you miss most about home?
LD: Spending time with my family, being around my high school friends and playing at my local tennis club. I only get to see my mom at most four times a year, so that's tough.
RSS: What do you during your summer breaks?
LD: I teach and play tennis in Boston.
RSS: What is your favorite thing about living in New York?
LD: Access to New York City is great. It's fun to go in and just hang out for the day. The location is also great because it's close to my home in Toronto and it's not that far from Boston.
RSS: What is your least favorite thing about living in New York?
LD: The traffic.
RSS: What is your favorite place to eat around campus and why?
LD: My new favorite place is Pizzeria Uno in Forest Hills. I've recently started to like the deep dish pizza.
RSS: If you could play tennis against anyone, who would it be and why?
LD: Roger Federer because I kind of base my game on his. I play a similar style, like an all court game, and he's an idol of mine.
RSS: If you could ask him one question, what would it be?
LD: How are you so good?
RSS: If you were given a free round-trip ticket to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
LD: Somewhere in Asia like Tokyo or Hong Kong. It's the fastest growing place in the world and it is always changing, so I would like to see what it is all about.
RSS: In one word, how would your teammates describe you?
LD: Crazy in the sense that from one moment to the next you just don't know what's going to happen next.
RSS: What would you like to do after graduation?
LD: I don't want to go into an office job immediately. Eventually I want to become a trader or financial consultant, but before then, I'd like to travel and somehow use tennis to do that, whether it be teaching or playing tennis. I would like to see the world.
