DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - The Red Storm softball team evened its record to 7-7 with two wins over Bethune-Cookman. The first win of the day came as St. John's posted its second extra inning game in two days, edging Bethune-Cookman 7-6 in eight. In game two, freshman pitcher Jessica Foley dominated in the circle, allowing only two runs in a complete game.
Game One:
For the second time in two days, the Red Storm took a game into extra innings. St. John's edged Bethune-Cookman in an eight inning, 7-6 game.
The Red Storm took advantage of two errors in the first innings and started out 2-0. A big fifth inning put St. John's up 6-4. Megan Oliver scored her second run of the game and Jessica Foley singled to center field to drive in two more.
Bethune-Cookman caught up in sixth though, tying the game at 6-6. Pitcher Alana Gaines had a two run home run to put the Lady Tigers back in the game.
The Red Storm finished strong though with smart base running by Loren Anguiano. Anguiano started the inning at second base due to the tie breaker rule and advanced to third on a single by Blair Belloni. When Gaines threw a wild pitch to Danielle Estrada, Anguiano came in to score the winning run.
Lisa Geer pitched through the first four innings and left with the Red Storm up 6-4. Kim Lerch came in as relief and in the eighth inning, secured the win for St. John's by striking out one, catching a pop up and making the play at home to get the third and final out of the game.
Game Two:
The Red Strom continued its tendency to score first, putting up five in the first inning. The first four batters in St. John's starting lineup all came in to score and freshman Roxann Struble posted the fifth run on a fielder's choice.
Jessica Foley started in the circle in game two and earned her second win of the season. Foley fanned five over the last four innings and six overall. She worked her way out of a bases load situation in the fourth and shutout Bethune-Cookman's offense after the third.
St. John's defeated Bethune-Cookman by a final score of 5-2.
Oliver had the most success against the Lady Tigers, going 3-for-8 with three runs and one RBI. Struble was 3-for-7 with two runs.
The Red Storm is gearing up for the Florida State Tournament, Friday March 10 through Sunday, March 12. St. John's first opponent is No. 17/17 Nebraska, scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday.
