QUEENS, N.Y. -
The St. John's softball team split a pair of games with Long Island University in non-conference action on Sunday. The Red Storm won game one, 4-2, as Lisa Geer picked up her fourth win of the week. Long Island took game two by a final score of 4-2.
Game One: The Red Storm continued its trend of scoring in the first inning as Lauren Lupinetti (Long Beach, Calif.) drove in Tami Hill (San Deigo, Calif.) with a single to left field. St. John's took a 2-0 lead when Danielle Estrada (Moreno Valley, Calif.) crossed the plate on a fielder's choice.
Senior Megan Oliver (Endicott, N.Y.) blasted her first triple of the season to fence in right-center field in the fifth inning and was brought home by Lupinetti's second RBI single of the game. The Red Storm went ahead 4-0.
In the circle, Lisa Geer (Anaheim, Calif.) gave another solid pitching performance. Long Island loaded the bases with one out but Geer look unfazed as she retired the next two batters. She did not allow a run to score until the top of the seventh inning when she gave up two. A nice defensive play Estrada helped Geer pick up her fourth win of the week as the second basemen turned a double play to get out of the inning. Geer fanned eight in the 4-2 victory.
Game Two: Long Island came out on top in game two as it took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. All three runs were unearned for starting Red Storm pitcher Jessica Foley (Orange County, Calif.) on three St. John's defensive errors.
Hill and Lupinetti teamed up again in the bottom of the third inning to put the Red Storm on the board. With Hill on second, Lupinetti's posted her third RBI of the day with a hard hit single to center field. St. John's did not score again until the sixth, when Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) started the inning out with a triple to left-center field. Loren Anguiano (Mesa, Ariz.) sacrifice fly to right field allowed Sherlock to score and put St. John's within reach of LIU, 4-2.
The Red Storm could not piece anything together in the seventh inning, handing Foley her tenth loss of the season. Foley struck out three in a complete game and gave up only one earned run on five hits.
Lupinetti led St. John's going 4-for-6 at the plate with three RBI while Sherlock was 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
