QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team stormed past Villanova Friday afternoon at Cunningham Park in Queens, N.Y. The Red Storm blanked the Wildcats, 6-0. Due to inclement weather, the teams did not compete in the three doubles flights. The Red Storm improves to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Wildcats fall to 5-9 on the season and 1-4 in league action.
St. John's was led at the No. 1 spot by junior Louis Desmarteaux (Thornhill, Ontario). He topped Dimitri Chimerakus (6-3, 6-2). David Nylen (Orebro, Sweden) recorded a straight set win for the Red Storm at the No. 2 spot. He defeated Brian Maher (6-1, 6-1). Tom Green (Norwich, England) knocked down Scott Fahrendorf (6-1, 6-1) at the third position.
Meanwhile, freshman Alex Svetlakov (Minsk, Belarus) was victorious over Charlie Farmer (6-3, 6-3) in the fourth flight. Senior Morgan Bauer (New York, N.Y.) picked up his fifth straight singles win of the season against Sumantha Chittajallu (4-6, 6-1, 6-1) at the No. 5 spot, while junior Claudio Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) defeated Anuj Malhotra (6-1, 6-0) at the No. 6 spot.
The St. John's men's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, April 8 against BIG EAST foe Connecticut at 12 p.m on the Courts at St. John's. The Red Storm will also host the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
