QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team swept BIG EAST rival Connecticut, 7-0, Sunday afternoon in Storrs, Conn. The Red Storm improves to 9-6 overall and 6-2 in conference action, while the Huskies dip to 4-12 overall and 1-5 in the BIG EAST.
The Red Storm began the afternoon by sweeping the doubles matches to pick up the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play. Alison Adamski (Jamaica Estates, N.Y.) and Nataly Tumsevica (Riga, Lativa) recorded an 8-2 victory at the No. 1 position over BreAnn Cheung and Christine Burek. At the No. 2 spot, Barbora Blahutiakova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and Mariana Chachua (Tbilisi, Georgia) topped Jaclyn Shapiro and Liz Dibbs, 8-4, while Lauren Lorenzetti (Northfield, N.J.) and Gabija Gasiunaite (Kaunas, Latvia) defeated Jessica Porter and Alison Koch, 8-4.
In singles action, Tumsevica topped Shapiro (6-4, 7-6, 7-0) at the No. 1 spot, while Chachua defeated Burek (7-5, 6-3) at the No. 2 position. In the third flight, Blahutiakova sped past Porter (6-0, 6-3) to a straight set victory. Lorenzetti was challenged to a three set match and pulled away with the come-from-behind win (2-6, 6-1, 6-1) after dropping the first set to Cheung.
At the No. 5 spot, Adamski knocked down Dibbs (6-1, 6-0) in straight sets, while Gasiunaite defeated Ashley Petruzzi (7-6, 6-2) in the sixth flight.
The Red Storm returns home to host Southern Mississippi in non-conference action on Monday, April 10 on the Courts at St. John's. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
