SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Despite an early 2-0 lead, the eighth seeded Red Storm fell to the top seeded Cardinals, 8-2, in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championships. After two days of postponements due to rain, St. John's looked poised to take its first game of the Tournament but Louisville, who is ranked 18th in the nation, posted a crushing six-run third inning to over come the Red Storm.
The game between the two teams originally began Friday afternoon, but was eventually called due to heavy rains. When the game was halted in the bottom of the first, St. John's held a 1-0 lead.
Leadoff hitter for the Red Storm, junior Tami Hill (San Diego, Calif.) started the game off with a single to left field. She was brought home by a Lauren Lupinetti (Long Beach, Calif.) RBI single, giving St. John's a 1-0 lead.
When the game resumed on Saturday, Loren Anguiano (Mesa, Ariz.) belted a walk off solo home run over the fence in left field. The homer gave the Red Storm a 2-0 boost in the top of the 2nd inning.
It wasn't enough though, as the Cardinals posted six runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good. The six Louisville runs came on a pair of doubles, a pair of singles and a walk. Despite posting nine hits to Louisville's seven, the Red Storm could not post a come back.
The final two runs of the game came on a two-run shot to right by Louisville's Candi Hicks.
"We played solid defense and out hit them," said head coach Debbie DeJong. "The difference between us and Louisville is they got some timely hits. I am very proud of my team. They battled throughout the game and did not give up. This is a great step for our program and we will use this to build off of for next season."
Lupinetti lead the Red Storm going 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and one walk while Hill was 2-for-4 with one run scored.
