QUEENS, N.Y. -
The St. John's softball team was named the Storm Tracker Champion for the 2005-06 academic school year. The team finished with 3,466 points, narrowly defeating the women's golf team who had 3,380.
"I am really proud of our team," said head coach Debbie DeJong. "This is just another example of how our girls work hard to excel both on and off the field."
The Storm Tracker point system was implemented this year to provide student-athletes with an opportunity to enhance their life skills through competition amongst each other. The Storm Tracker points board is based on four key components: Academic Excellence, Personal Development, Career Development and Community Service. Each athletic team has a chance to collect points individually and collectively in each category. The team collecting the most points at the end of the academic year wins the championship.
The softball team, which was recently named the Community Service Award winner, racked up 750 points in both team and individual community service projects. The next closest team to softball was baseball with 480.
Another strong category for the softball team was in Academic Achievement. They had more study hall hours than any other team on the board and had eight members make the honor roll during the year.
