QUEENS, N.Y. -
The St. John's softball team fell to DePaul University, 7-0 and 9-1, on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Lisa Geer was charged with both losses and falls to 13-11 on the season. The Red Storm are 27-27 overall, 8-12 in the BIG EAST.
Game One: Starting pitcher Lisa Geer (Anaheim, Calif.) was solid through the first five innings, facing no more than four batters in each side. The game remained scoreless until DePaul's offense got heated up in the top of the sixth. Geer walked the leadoff hitter for the Blue Demons and gave up back-to-back singles with no outs recorded on the board. After two Red Storm fielding errors, DePaul was up 4-0 in the middle of the sixth.
DePaul added to its lead in the seventh inning off of St. John's third fielding error of the day. Jessica Evan's two-out double put the Blue Demons up 7-0.
Offensively, the Red Storm was held to two hits in game one against DePaul. Rookie Roxann Struble (Chino, Calif.) started the bottom of the third with a double to the left-center field fence but was stranded on second as DePaul's pitcher Stephanie Blagaich retired the next three batters in order.
St. John's tried to rally in the seventh as Jo Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) was walked to lead off the inning and Megan Oliver (Endicott, N.Y.) singled through the left side. The Red Storm loaded the bases when Lauren Lupinetti (Long Beach, Calif.) was hit by a pitch but was not able to capitalize, taking a 7-0 loss.
Geer finished game one with four strikeouts and four walks and gave up three earned runs.
Game Two: St. John's hit the ball early in game two as junior Tami Hill (San Diego, Calif.) led off the bottom of the first with a single to center field. Oliver singled through the right side and advanced to second on a passed ball to put runners in scoring position, but DePaul's starting pitcher Tracie Adix found her way out of trouble.
DePaul broke the game open in the top of the third inning off of Jaclyn Tarulli-Fisher's two-run home run over the center field fence. Junior Kim Lerch (Glen Head, N.Y.) came in to relieve Geer after the homer but St. John's would find itself in a 4-0 hole after back-to-back fielding errors.
The Blue Demons tacked another three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to take their second victory of the day, 9-1, in five innings.
The Red Storm's lone run of the day came on a Loren Anguiano's (Mesa, Ariz.) RBI single to shallow left-center field. She scored Oliver, who reached on Blue Demon's fielding error two batters earlier.
Seniors Oliver and Sherlock led the team offensively for the day. Oliver was 2-for-5 with one run scored while Sherlock went 2-for-4.
St. John's is still in contention for the eighth and final spot in the BIG EAST standings. The Red Storm will host the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader at Red Storm Field. The team will honor its four seniors in a post-game ceremony, immediately following game two.
