St. John???s senior third baseman Lauren Anguiano and junior hurler Lisa Geer put in standout performances as the Red Storm hosted the second of three fall softball events on campus in Queens.
Anguiano went 3-for-6 on the day, driving in two Red Storm runs, as the squad fell in a 5-1 decision at the hands of LIU and in a 2-1 contest to Sacred Heart.
Meanwhile, Geer struck out eight and allowed only three hits through the first six innings of Game One, before LIU rallied to take the first contest with a four-run seventh. She also came up with a surprise double in a rare plate appearance in Game Three, and played solid defense at first base to close out the game.
Game One: St. John???s vs. LIU
Geer retired the LIU batters in order across the first three innings, striking out three of the first nine Blackbird batters. The St. John???s offense looked to be geared up early however, as leadoff batter Tami Hill blooped a single to right and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by rookie centerfielder Shauntaine Harris. Anguiano smacked a grounder that was too hot to handle for LIU second baseman Raylene Asman, plating Hill.
LIU broke onto the scoreboard in the fourth, when leadoff batter Brynn Lewis was hit by a Geer offering, reached second on a Melissa DePippo single, and advanced to third on a passed ball. Lewis scored on a slow roller to short by Blackbird junior Vanessa Mejia.
Geer fanned three more across the next two innings, and the score was tied at 1-1 headed into the seventh. Two walks and a LIU single set the table for sophomore Renea Beauchman, who dropped a bases-loaded single off the end of the bat and into shallow center, scoring a pair of Blackbird runs. A passed ball enabled LIU???s Randi Gillespie to score, giving the Blackbirds their final 4-1 advantage.
Game Two: LIU vs. Sacred Heart
Beauchman ended a 1-1 tie with a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, giving LIU a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart. Freshman pitcher Blaire Porter picked up the win for the Blackbirds, giving them a 2-0 record on the day.
Game Three: Sacred Heart vs. St. John???s
After falling by a one-run decision earlier in the day, the Sacred Heart Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, pounding out five hits in their first turn at the plate. Sophomore second baseman Betsy Harvey hit a two-run homer to right as part of the early fireworks.
St. John???s broke through in the fourth as junior transfer Spring Montgomery notched the Red Storm???s first hit of the game, and Geer roped her double in the fifth. Sacred Heart senior hurler Megan Spehar was able to keep the Red Storm off the board until the sixth.
The speedy Harris opened things up, belting a one-hopper to the wall in right-center and sliding in for a triple. That set the stage for Anguiano, who slapped a bouncer through the left side. Senior pitcher Kim Lerch took the loss for St. John???s, and Montgomery came on in the sixth to retire the Pioneers in order.
St. John???s returns to fall softball action on Saturday, Sept. 30, as the Red Storm play host to Dowling and Marist. Game times are slated for 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
