The St. John???s men???s golf team finished as the runner-up at the 2006 McLaughlin at Bethpage on Saturday, Sept. 23. The Red Storm carded an 837 (280-281-276) over the three round event, coming in just two strokes behind the University of Akron, which captured the championship title with an 835 (273-286-276).
???Our guys played great during the McLaughlin,???said head coach Frank Darby. ???It was fun being out there with Akron battling for the top spot. I was impressed with what I saw from my golfers and I???m excited to see how we do our next time out.???
George Zolotas birdied the 16th and 17th holes to finish in second place overall and keep alive his streak of five consecutive rounds under par. The junior finished with a four-under par 206 (68-69-69).
Each one of the Red Storm golfers produced in clutch situations over the three rounds of the McLaughlin; Saturday was no different. Kevin Velardo posted his first under-par round of the fall with a 67 and helped keep St. John???s in close contention with Akron for the title.
Junior Keegan Bradley was even for the tournament (68-72-70) and came in seventh place. Rookie Dan Mollicone was also even on the green in round three and finished with a 217 (75-72-70). Classmate Mike Ballo Jr., carded a 215 in his first collegiate event, good for 20th place overall.
Joe Yastrub and Casey Calmi competed individually and finished with a 226 and 225, respectively.
