WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - A strong second-half showing that featured 57.1 percent shooting from the field helped the St. John's women's basketball team post its second-straight victory of the season with a 71-48 defeat over Monmouth University at Boylan Gymnasium.
The victory improves the Red Storm's record to 4-1 on the season and marks the fourth win in as many tries against the Hawks (1-5).
Junior Monique McLean led the team for the fourth time this season with 16 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Senior Tiina Sten chipped in with her best scoring game this year with 15 points, and she also tied her career-best with four blocks. Freshman Sky Lindsay added a career-best 13 points (6-13), including 11 in the first half.
Kristin Moore was just shy of hitting double figures for the second time this year with an eight-point outing. The junior came off the bench and played in 23 minutes, going 4-for-4 while pulling down four rebounds. Freshman Coco Hart was another reserve who had a solid game, scoring a season-high five points
St. John's relied on its potent offense in the win and it came through in the end. Even though the game was close in the first stanza, the Red Storm hit 48.3 percent of its shots. In the second half, the Red Storm dominated and connected on 57.1 percent of its shots to outscore the Hawks 40-21. Overall, St. John's shot 52.6 percent, while holding Monmouth to 31.6 percent.
One of the keys to victory was the team's 37 points it scored off turnovers. The Hawks offense dwindled in the second half in part to 19 turnovers that the Red Storm scored 20 points off of.
With the score 14-12 in St. John's favor, the Red Storm opened up the game by going on a 14-5 run to jump ahead by 11, 28-17. Moore and Joy McCorvey combined for eight points during that stretch, as Moore nailed two jump shots and McCorvey scored on two layups.
The Red Strom couldn't keep up its scoring efforts and went over two minutes without hitting a basket. Monmouth saw the opportunity and capitalized by going on a 10-3 run to come within four points, 31-27, at the half.
The start of the second half was the complete opposite of how the first one ended. St. John's came out of the lockerroom firing and scored 12 unanswered points to lead 43-27. The Hawks struggled matching up with the Red Storm and did not hit their first basket of the half until the 16:02 mark.
The Red Storm will look to continue its winning ways when it returns to Carnesecca Arena to Boston University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
