QUEENS, N.Y. - Three players scored in double figures as the St. John's women's basketball team won its third-straight game of the season with a 76-69 win over Boston University on Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.
Monique McLean led the way for the Red Storm on the offensive side, hitting 7-of-15 for 21 points. The point total ties her season high and marks the fifth time she has led the team and her second 20-point game of the season.
Freshman Sky Lindsay tallied her second-straight double-digit scoring game and her fourth of the season with 13 points. The guard, who was 5-for-12 from the field, tied her career best in points she set against Monmouth on Nov. 28.
Working her way back from injury, senior Kia Wright played in only her third game of the season and had her best performance yet with 13 points. In addition to tallying her first double-digit scoring effort of the season, she also scored her 1,200th career point and moved into sole possession of ninth place in the St. John's career record books.
Freshman Coco Hart was key for the team off the bench, tying for the team high with eight boards. She set a new career high in that category, in addition to scoring a personal best six points.
The game was close throughout and despite scoring surges from St. John's at various points of the contest that built its lead to double figures, BU (5-3) managed to cut the deficit down each time and make a game of it. Although the Red Storm had a better offensive showing than its opponent, shooting 45.0 to BU's 35.6, St. John's wasn't able to get into a consistent scoring rhythm due to the pressure defense by the Terriers.
Trailing a point in the opening half, 8-7, McLean took things into her hands and hit consecutive baskets and a free throw to give St. John's the lead, 12-8. The Red Storm eventually went ahead by eight, 18-10, but BU answered back by knotting the score when Amarachi Umez-Eronini hit a jumper at the 6:35 mark. The game remained close until St. John's went on an 8-2 run to close out the first half ahead by 10, 41-31.
After the break, St. John's continued its scoring and jumped out to its largest lead of the day, 14 points, after Lindsay converted a jumper at the 15:55 mark, 48-34. BU wouldn't rest quietly though despite having five players with four fouls. The Terriers chipped into the lead and managed to come within five points of the lead when Cheri Raffo hit a 3-pointer at the 1:38 mark
St. John's will continue its homestand on Tuesday when it hosts Amass at 7 p.m.
